The world’s outside a window frame

There’s rain on the cars below

People outside look like they’re in pain

But they’re laughing hard at stories I don’t know

But I have one that I hold on to

And it’s sad, but I never seem to want to let it go, let it go

 

Young woman one year younger than the old boy loving her blind

Two cars parked by a highway sign, big old world zipping by

She backs away, musters a smile, says,

“Drive safe, baby, I’ll see you, now, on the other side.”

 

He drives away with rhymes to remember

Long day’s journey, write it down along the way

Young poet with a bleeding heart thinking more about the metaphor

Than the woman driving away, driving away

 

Two cars diverged on a yellow road

One for a home, one for the stars

Look, the little lad he goes, standing on his tippy-toes

Trying to see himself too far away, gone

Two cars diverged on a yellow road and that boy lost someone

 

Long promises and short love letters

Sweet-smelling sounds over the phone

He said, “I sure love you, baby, I’d sure love to see you sooner.

Sooner would I cry than mess with my dream

Sooner would I die than ruin yours.”

For the road is so long

All that’s lost is new again

All that’s born is gone

But maybe if this road stretches all

All around the world I could come and see you again
